Sometime around the 3rd season of TNG, Rick Sternbach explored the possibility of a Type-III extension for the new-design TNG "Cobra Phaser." This would be in the form of a front section which, when attached, would "Fire compact plasma toroids at 50,000 - 150,000 m/sec muzzle velocity. Developed for use against Borgs or other forms which reflect/absorb phaser energy."
Mike Bolin has once again built this design from scratch. In the process Mike discarded the proper Type-II phaser design in favour of the modified version shown, as he found the original didn't look right with the extension. He also discarded the exaggerated lip on the Type-II's butt because it looked silly. |
